An Update.

So, I've been cast in a Swashbuckler show called The Accidental Patriot with Stolen Chair Theatre Company. It seems like it is going to be a good show.

The website has been updated...check it out.

Barnes and Noble Chelsea is close. :( I am now back to ushering on Broadway mainly at the August Wilson Theatre for the show Jersey Boys. But in the last week I have also worked A Catered Affair, Spring Awakening, and Patti Lapone's Gypsy.

I have to say... My day today was certainly star studded. I had a conversation with 1992 Tony Award winner for Faith Prince, Had a conversation with Multi- Tony award winner Harvey Fierstien and ran into the girl that plays the granddaughter in August: Osage County. That's why I love New York.

I Met the Devil..... and she wears PRADA

So I opened at Barnes and Noble today for the first time ever. It was pretty easy. For the most part of the morning the store was pretty quiet and it picked up around noon. However, in those quiet hours at the beginning of the day... it happened. I saw the devil.

She stood before me, a lot shorter than I expected, but they usually are shorter than you expect with the reputations they have. Her long brown fur coat hit her about mid-thigh and glistened so that there was no doubt the fur was real. Her strawberry blonde bob was topped with an elegant little hat. Almost before I had a chance to register what was going on, her assistant wisked her away into her chaffered towncar and she was gone.

Anna Wintour, the fashion editor made famous by her fictional counterpart Miranda Priestly in the movie The Devil Wears Prada, shops at Barnes and Noble Chelsea.

A New Job

Yesterday, I started working at the Barnes and Noble Chelsea. YAY!!! When I went in yesterday I was given a tour of the whole store then started on the job training in the Children's department. I will be working in the children's and Performing Arts sections of the store. I got a name tag and a locker in the break room.

So i've been working in children's shelving books, finding books for people, and answering questions. Also, I recommend books to people. This is hard. Usually I just recommend books my momma read me or books that I have read. But people come in looking for gifts for christmas.... like this one today....

Customer- I need a book for a 12 year old girl.

Me- What is she interested in?

Customer- I don't know. She's my granddaughter and she lives in South Carolina and she needs something for christmas.

Me- Ok.... Let's start over here with the american girls sections.....

It's hard when people don't know what they want. And, I don't remember what I was reading at what age. So, I'm talking with customers and trying to gage the reading level of the recipient. It's hard.

And there are job hazards I have learned..... I got a paper cut today :( and the location of the paper cut makes it look like I tried to slit my wrist. But I didn't. I like this job. It's a lot better than my last one........

I went for a job fair at starbucks in Union Square today. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF STARBUCKS!!!! They keep giving me the run around. Every time I go into a starbucks and ask about upcoming Job fairs they give me information but when i show up they give me a different date and location. I am done with it!!

I went to Barnes and Noble and turned in an application and immediately was asked for an interview. The Interview went well. They need a few days to check my references then I should be hearing from them. Hopefully it will be good news.

Friday September 7, 2007 Brooklyn, NY

Well, I've been busy booking auditions. Starting saturday I have almost a week of non stop auditions. Saturday I audition for a spiritual (though non-denominational) company, On sunday I audition to work with Anne Bogart (theatre legend) and the guy who is the artistic director for Classic Stage Company (it's not paid :( but it would be invaluable experience working with the MFA directing program at Columbia) On Monday I audition for the Bat theatre company and Adam Rapp. Tuesday I have my interview with the Atlantic theatre school and an audition for extra work in the Sex in the City Movie (I know, not exactly a way to build my career but it VERY good money) Then i have a few days that are still open at the moment. Next Monday I have an audition for the broadway production of Edward II. I may also have an audition for Proof around that same time (still waiting for confirmation on that one.) So yeah. that's what i've been up to lately.

Vacation

August 28, 2007 Brooklyn, NY

SO after finishing the festival I went to Coney Island with John. We, We started the day out on Brighton Beach, playing in the surf and soaking up the sun. Then we walked down to the COney Island Boardwalk, had Nathan's hot dogs and daquris on the beach. It was a nice relaxing vaction because... New York City starts to wear on you and you need to escape once in a while. NOw I am refreshed and ready for whatever comes next.

August 20, 2007 East Village, Manhattan

This past week has been CRAZY! Still working the festival till Sunday. Then, I've been hired to work the next little festival at the Gene Frankel. I was off last monday so i slept in and then went to see Stardust with John. It was a good movie. The people at the festival get craizer and craizer and I want more money for having to deal with insane audience members. I won't get it... but i want it. Friday night John and I went out with Christine Ebersole to the West Bank Cafe for "The After Party" (a kareoke party). that was a lot of fun. It's amazing how you get treated like a VIP when you are sitting at the same table as a two time Tony award winner. I was off today and spent my time relaxing and sent out the first batch of my mass mailing. Soon my face will be plastered around NYC (i hope). Anyway, that;s all i have for now.

Working Man

August 11, 2007 The Gene Frankel Theatre, East Village, Manhattan

So, from being a volunteer at the Main box office for FringeNYC , I recieved a promotion to Venue Box Office Manager at the Gene Franklin theatre at 24 Bond street (at Lafayette). This positions, though still volunteer, is a stipended position so I will be maiking some money for it. However, the big advantage is that I am recieving MASSIVE amounts of box office training and I have a contact with the box office for the Round About Theatre Company and will be applying for a job there once the festival ends for a survival job. SO, that's what's new right now. I work from 11 to 9:30 day without a break. This is a big festival!!!! About to open the box office for the next show so I'd better go.

Insanity

Thurday August 2, 2007 Brooklyn NY 1:50am

Went out with John last night for pizza, ice cream and to see Ratatouille. It was a fun night of hanging out. Today I went to some discount designer stores to scope out the clothing scene. I'll be looking to buy some new clothes soon. I also got the info that i needed to apply to be a substitute usher for Jujamcyn Entertainment (who own several Broadway Theatres including the Walter Kerr, The O'Neil, and the Saint James) and the info to apply for a job doing promotional work with Promotionals1. YAY!! I might be working soon! I also applied to be a volunteer for the NYCFringe festival so I can meet people and get free tickets to see the new up and coming work in NY.

In other news, I think I have completely lost my mind. I've decided what i want to write as my next play. It is very ambitious but here goes.... I'm going to write a play that would fit in to the Shakespearean Canon. Just to see if I can do it. I know. I'm crazy, right.

Update

Tuesday July 31, 2007 Brooklyn, NY

I went to the closing night party for Grey Gardens sunday night and it was absolutely wonderful!!! It was held at the Bryant Park Grill right behind the NY Public Library on Fifth Ave. They served hors d'vores, steak, Pene pasta, ravioli, and chicken marsala. They had a full bar and an extensive dessert table. And all of this was absolutely free to the revelers! There were also 3 psychics, and 2 photo booths. I was able to have drinks and laughs with Christine Ebersol, Mary Louise Wilson, John McMartin, Matt Cavenaugh, Asa Somers, Scott Frankel (the lyricist), Jerry (the real Jerry on whom the character in the play is written), and Kelly Gonda. Kelly is the founder of East of Doheny the major producer of Grey Gardens. So, it was a very entertaining evening. I also visited with friends i have made with the merchandising and backstage staff.

I've spent pretty much all day working on my new website and IT HAS BEEN LAUNCHED!!! You can now check me out on www.jaredrpike.com!! I'm still having some technical difficulties with the navigation bar and need to put some more info in places but it is up on the web now.

And I will leave you with this thought:

John Raymond Barker, Christine Ebersole, and I at the Closing Night Party for Grey Gardens.
